Meet our partners — Albuquerque RPG and Big Bad Con

We’re pleased to partner with Albuquerque RPG and Big Bad Con to sponsor the 2016 Metatopia Scholarship.

Albuquerque RPG is a group dedicated to increasing the diversity both in gamers and in games in the Albuquerque area. We have a number of events that attempt to reach out to the larger gaming community. Over the last fifteen years roleplaying games have undergone a renaissance and we wish to increase the awareness of these smaller games to the community as a whole while encouraging more women and minority gamers and designers. All are welcome in what we strive to make a safe gaming space.

New MexiCon is our annual gaming convention where a wide variety of small press indie games are pitched and played. It is patterned after the Games On Demand venue at Origins Game Fair and is designed to encourage people to try different games. We just finished with our third annual New MexiCon and are already preparing for New MexiCon 2017. We think it is going to be our best year yet!

We are small but we are growing. We just began offering a Metatopia scholarship to allow minority game designers (and those game designers who tackle tough and lesser known stories) who might not be able to go otherwise to make it to Metatopia and take advantage of that huge well of playtesters and game designers there. We have a meetup site dedicated to promoting games of all kinds in the Albuquerque area with weekly games stretching from Traveller and 5th edition D&D to Golden Sky Stories, Inspectres and Millenial Apartment hungers. It is a place where people looking to game can find one.

Big Bad ConBig Bad Con is a non-profit rpg and larp convention in the California East Bay. We are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment of diverse gamers.

2016 marks us opening our doors to gamers ages 13-17, with an exclusive Teen Track of games, panels, and workshops. We believe that young gamers need age-appropriate games, and all gamers should play in an environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves freely.

We donate the profits of our con to Doctors Without Borders, run a canned food drive for local food banks, and our vendors donate to a charity of their choice. And as part of our recent Kickstarter campaign to help us expand into teen games, we raised enough money for our Scholarship Fund to give seven people financial assistance to attend.

Big Bad Con’s mission is to provide great games while doing good deeds. We are very proud to be a part of the 2016 Metatopia Scholarship, and are excited to be sending California Bay Area game designers across the country to this amazing event.

Upwind RPG project launches on Kickstarter October 11th!

UpwindFrom the partnership of Biohazard Games and Nocturnal Media – the creators of the Blue Planet RPG, the Midnight d20 setting and the renown World of Darkness series – comes the fantastical new game Upwind – a roleplaying fable of lost science, elemental magic and uncharted skies.

Imagine Bakshi’s classic animated film Wizards has a head-on collision with Disney’s Treasure Planet and the resulting fire is put out with a whole lot of Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky. That, in an unexpected, animated mash-up, is Upwind. The game is a narrative style RPG set in a strange alternate world of floating island nations, flying sailing ships, long lost technology, wild elemental powers, looming war and forgotten legacies. Upwind is powered by the Q-system, an original stakes-based, playing card-driven mechanic that gives every encounter consequences with meaningful, narrative-building outcomes. With its unique bidding rules, Upwind plays as fast as you can tell your story.

The Explorer Knight’s Pledge
To honor the Guild
I so vow
To seek the Knowledge
I so vow
To defend the Kingdoms
I so vow
To defy the Dark
I so vow

We are excited to finally launch our Kickstarter campaign and look forward to sharing the game. If you want to learn more about Upwind check out the Kickstarter and explore our website. If you are interested in our Upwind press kit please follow this link and freely use whatever you need.

#Feminism Game Anthology is an Indiecade Nominee!

#Feminism coverThe #Feminist Editors are proud and delighted to announce that #Feminism is a 2016 IndieCade Nominee. IndieCade is the premier international festival of independent games. Its programs are designed to bring visibility to and facilitate the production of new works within the emerging independent game community.
We’ll be in Los Angeles for the big festival October 14-16. Swing by our display for some fast feminist fun.

About #Feminism:
Looking at the world through a feminist lens reveals absurd, tragic, and fascinating situations. Written by feminists from eleven different countries, #Feminism offers bite-sized takes on contemporary feminist issues. Each of the 34 nano-games in this collection requires between three and five participants, simple (if any) props, and up to an hour of play time. The games range from silly to serious, including scenarios about selfies and rom-coms as well as reproductive rights and domestic violence. And of course, enjoyment has no ideological boundaries—there are games here for participants new to feminism as well as those experienced in making gender arguments on the internet.
