Fraser Ronald Launches His Patreon!

Patreon Covers Swords Edge Publishing 2017

Fraser Ronald, the RPG designer behind Sword’s Edge, Nefertiti Overdrive, Centurion, and Sword Noir, has launched his Patreon. His fiction has been published in On Spec, Black Gate, and Fantastic Stories. He was a co-host on the modern gaming podcast the Accidental Survivors and is now a co-host on the Ottawa Game Publishers Podcast.

This Patreon will support monthly electronic releases of adventures, games, and some genre fiction. Some of the adventures will be designed for convention play, meaning they are one-shots that run about four hours. Other adventures will be longer stories designed as campaigns. The RPGs will be under 50 pages, with simple mechanics geared toward supporting strong narratives. The genre fiction will be mostly fantasy short stories, but may also include novel-sized serial fiction.

Metatopia Scholarship Now Live!

Metatopia 2017 Double Exposure, Inc. 2017

The application for the Metatopia scholarship is now live, and each and every designer from a marginalized community working on their first game is encouraged to apply. This includes women, PoC, and LGBTQIA.

Apply here: https://goo.gl/HZ5EW1

The scholarship is a joint effort between the Indie Game Developer Network and Double Exposure, Inc. to raise the number of diverse designers in the field. It does this by sending a group of new designers to Metatopia to playtest their game. The scholarship provides a travel stipend, designer badge, and room for the duration of the conventions. Scholarship winners will also be matched with a mentor and will join the rest of the scholarship recipients for breakfast every day to talk through their experience.

A Single Moment TAG Sessions 2017

Tobie Abad of TAG Sessions was featured in GMA Network’s online portal on August 29, 2017. The article focused on his game, A Single Moment, being the Runner Up for Best System in the recently concluded Indie Groundbreaker Awards 2017. Hopefully, the article will encourage even more new creators to take the stab at releasing their work and finding their audience. It isn’t common for the local media to even be interested in role-playing game events or affairs, so the article was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Here’s an excerpt:

In the ‘70s, “Dungeons & Dragons” introduced us to the thrills of slaying monsters and saving fantasy kingdoms in the comfort of our homes.

The tabletop role-playing game (RPG) has evolved since then, tackling diverse themes and experimenting with a variety of new mechanics.

Take, for example, Filipino game designer Tobie Abad’s “A Single Moment,” which was runner-up for Best Rules at the 2017 Indie Groundbreaker Awards. The RPG revolves around two samurai—once dear friends, now bitter enemies—whose paths have led them to a single, defining clash that will decide who lives and who dies.

The sword fight, however, is but one aspect of the game. “A Single Moment” explores each character’s motivations and the events in their past that contributed to their enmity. It’s a game as much about emotions and personal philosophy as it is about blood-drenched katana.

Gen Con 50 Highlights

Each and every year the frothing hordes of gamers the world over crash land in Indianapolis, IN for the best four days in gaming. Of course we’re talking about GEN CON, the Super Bowl of tabletop gaming. This year the IGDN was there en masse. Our companies were represented well and everyone had a complete and total blast. To all those who came by our booths and played our games and hung out, thank you! Here is a recap of some the goings-on from IGDNers.

The ENnie Awards

“Evil Hat’s Bubblegumshoe was in fierce competition for the Best Family Game, along with two other amazing IGDN games: Epyllion and Masks: A New Generation. But the care taken by Tiara Lynn Agresta in making it beautiful and readable, and by the whole creative team in making it a game adults and younger folks could enjoy seems to have paid off. It felt good to see the Silver go to Magpie’s Masks. So many thanks to the people who fell in love with our sleuths and gave Bubblegumshoe the gold!”

– Emily Care Boss

The ENnies, EN World’s annual award show, is an industry shaper. That site is the one-stop shop for RPG reviews online, so we’re very pleased to have had numerous winners and nominees across many categories!

One of the highlights of the evening was Bubblegumshoe, co-designed by our very own Emily Care Boss, taking the gold in the Best Family Game category. This category also featured Magpie Games’ Masks (which won silver) and Epyllion. Continue reading
