Inheritors

One Hour RPG

My advice to all people trying to get started in RPG design is to start small. And keep coming back to small. RPGs can be giant hardcover books but you can also do a huge amount with a few tiny touches. All the games in this series were produced in one hour flat, using the GAMES system. You can find them all and that system on the Tin Star Games page and watch us making one on youtube. If you use our method and/or make a game in an hour, please link to the site and let us host a link to your game!

Inheritors is a weird setting that we took a long time to tease out but it asks a very interesting philosophical question: who is deserving and how do you tell? Very few RPGs tackle this kind of thing, even though “splats” are the perfect place to discuss philosophy, as we do here. It is however not really clear how stories play on in this setting, and how player-characters would settle their arguments! Presumably they figure out the one they like the best, either because the GM makes them a nice person or by players picking one and establishing their own reasons. The setting might actually work better in fiction - but it’s a really different take on superheroes. If superpowers were assigned, who would you give them to? I like games that force these kinds of hard questions. Finally, the system here is fun in how rolling your single die stats is really likely to cause a critical failure, but you also need to do it to get more Karma.
